Keeping communities informed about their pond

Community ponds and lakes in Texas are engineered to function in storm-water management; however, they can serve as amenities for residents of the community. The objective of community lake management is to manage the aesthetic qualities of the pond while preserving the functional and recreational uses of the resource. Traditionally, lake management includes aquatic vegetation control, nutrient reduction, water quality maintenance, and fisheries management.

One of the most important components of community lake management is education. Communication with homeowners is essential when establishing or maintaining a lake management program. Every Texas pond is unique in its properties and the expectations of homeowners should be based on those properties. There are some cases where inherent flaws in the design or physical changes to the pond over time make them very difficult to maintain. In that scenario, homeowners should be notified and informed of the options needed to correct the problems.

Another very important subject for community pond owners is mosquito control. The last thing an HOA or management company wants to hear is that their urban pond is a mosquito breeding ground, and a potential carrier source for West Nile or Zika Virus. Desirable vegetation adjacent to ponds and lakes may be attractive, but could be providing a daytime resting habitat for adult mosquitoes. Routine management of algae and aquatic vegetation will reduce stagnant water present in your pond, and aeration is another solution. See our Services page on Mosquito Control.

Magnolia Fisheries’ staff regularly participates in property management meetings to present past findings and future recommendations.  We are also available to educate residents on their options and expectations. Call us if you would like us to assess and present to your community.
