Lake Management

Lake Management – enhancing and preserving your lake or pond in Dallas/Fort Worth

Lake Management is a term that defines the industry of preserving lakes, ponds, canals, or other surface water. It’s important to maintain the health, aesthetics, and use of the resource, whether you’re an HOA in Dallas with storm-water ponds or a ranch owner with a 100-acre lake. The goals of the lake owner or manager determine the methods we use.

Our clients count on our decades of education, advanced training, and field experience to provide the best and most affordable aquatic management programs in North Texas.

All lakes are different.

Education is a major part of an aquatic management program because all lakes are not created equal. Our first step is to assess the condition of the resource and provide several options to meet the owner’s expectations. We use an integrated approach that includes both proactive and reactive measures.

Owners or managers may focus on only one aspect of lake management to solve a single problem. We might recommend a broader approach that helps ensure a more well-rounded ecosystem. For example, the HOA board may only be concerned with aquatic weeds or water quality. A ranch owner may want to include improving fish health, angling and wildlife habitat into the plan.  Magnolia Fisheries will determine and recommend the best and most cost-effective options to reach your desired outcome.

Our integrated approach to better lake management

Lake management includes algae and aquatic weed control, water quality maintenance, and fisheries management.

Each of these categories are further broken down into subcomponents. Algae and weed management is often accomplished using EPA-registered products and biological controls. In special situations, we may also use physical removal of the unwanted growth. We choose the best options for you based on the species present, recreational uses, degree of control desired, and budget.

Water quality impacts most aspects of managing lakes or ponds. For instance, algae growth, water clarity, and fish health are all directly linked to the chemical properties of water. Our biologists use accepted scientific procedures to test for variables such as dissolved oxygen, pH, alkalinity, hardness and nutrient levels. We use these test results to predict the frequency and severity of unsightly or possibly harmful algae blooms (HABs). Poor water quality can be improved using commercial products like aeration systems, biological additives, and nutrient binding agents. Water quality testing is included as part of our normal contracted management services.

Taking Sediment Depth Readings

Start with a survey.

Magnolia Fisheries provides on-site assessments and effective solutions to your pond or lake problems. Not happy with the quality of your angling? Our electrofishing surveys will reveal the problems and cite qualified recommendations. Algae or invasive weeds becoming an eyesore to your community? Our vegetation surveys will identify the offending species and provide you with options for control. Pond getting shallower every year with excessive algae growth and bad odors? Our sediment surveys will accurately map the location and quantify of muck accumulation. These are just some of the pond management challenges that can be addressed by our professional staff.

Managing lakes is an evolving science.

Lake management is a dynamic science that is constantly evolving. The importance of our industry is growing due to continued commercial and residential development. Increased harmful algae blooms and the ongoing battle with invasive aquatic plants are major issues. At Magnolia Fisheries, we stay on top of the industry by regularly attending national and state conferences and maintaining relevant professional certifications. We frequently update our tool box with new technologies and recently approved aquatic products. Some of the newer developments in the field include survey grade bathymetric and sediment mapping, nutrient mitigation, and advancements in aeration technology.
